Who is winning, and the move
On 24 September 2026 Financial Cents made three AI agents free on every plan, announced with a survey of nearly 500 accounting and bookkeeping professionals finding that 95% use AI but only about one in five can show a measurable return; on 29 September it published a TaxDome pricing explainer that sets Karbon at $59 and Canopy at $74 per user beside its own $49. Karbon introduced its Kai AI coworker on 3 June 2026 at its San Diego conference. Canopy announced on 18 March that G2 ranked it first in tax practice management software.
The nearest competitors
Two nearby moves are worth watching. Karbon's homepage says it saves every employee 19.9 hours a week, citing its own 2026 Firm Usage Survey, whose responses represent 14% of its customers. Canopy's homepage headline promises to help accountants build an autonomous firm, while it labels Canopy Coworker coming soon.
The opening
Karbon, Financial Cents and Canopy each put a headline number on the homepage, Karbon's from its own survey, Financial Cents' 56 monthly hours per team member with no stated basis and Canopy's usage counts, and each also publishes named firms' before-and-after numbers: Safe Harbor Bookkeeping cutting invoicing from a full day to 90 minutes, Loewen Kruse CPA cutting work in progress by 40%, TaxBee & Co saving 20 hours a week. In all three stories the number is the firm's own word, with nothing on how it was measured, so a newcomer can win by publishing one firm's before-and-after from proposal to final bill, counted from the system's records, with dates and method shown. That is the proof a buyer comparing these pages cannot find on them.
